I spent last Friday afternoon in a cleaning frenzy, I flung open all the windows, plugged into my i-pod and boogied round the house as I swept, mopped, de-bugged, washed, ironed and tidied up. It took a good couple of hours and it felt good to be doing something different as I’d spent all week whizzing round the wards fire fighting the serious issues and getting pretty het up about things.
I finished just as it was getting dark so even though I was swelteringly hot I had to go and shut everything to stop the nightly mozzie invasion – and when I got to the front door there was a nasty surprise…there was a little hole poked in the fly screen and the keys that I know were definitely there were gone… The padlock was closed and the bolt was across the door, so I knew no one could have been in, but still that horrible panicky feeling swept over me and I immediately wished that I hadn’t been so stupid as to leave the keys dangling. Silly, silly me.
I told the guard and asked him to come have a look, which he did, and then proceeded to look incredulously at the flowerpots as if the perpetrator might be hiding behind one of them! I told him to be extra careful overnight so he fished out the big panga knife and propped it up against the leg of his chair! I managed to find another padlock and squeeze it in next to the other one so at least the door was a bit more secure. Its crazy how intimidated you can feel but I took all my precious bits and pieces to my room that night and locked myself in, something I haven’t done since I got here and it annoyed me a lot. I didn’t sleep that well either and got up at the crack of dawn next day, fished out my tool kit and swapped the front door lock with one of the others in the house - I don’t understand how locksmiths can charge such extortionate call out rates – its really not that hard to do yourself!!
Next morning after Ali got back and we were chatting away, catching up, I caught a glimpse of someone scooting round the side of the house and Ali caught sight of him outside the bathroom window too. We put 2 and 2 together and now understand who probably whipped the keys and other bits and pieces that have gone missing from the house - I won’t mention who it was here, suffice to say they are not a huge threat to our security but we’ve learnt our lesson – don’t tempt twiglets with dangling keys and stuff on window sills.
