Its changed so much since July, everything is green – I looks like an enormous luscious garden not dust bowl – amazing.
We wouldn’t have been able to drive to the camp this time though because a lot of the roads are impassable because of the rain so we parked up in Liwonde and got picked up in a speed boat instead. So, the game spotting began, kicked off with some elephants have an afternoon swim…
The night drive a bit later on was pretty cool too – as soon as the sun set the forest came alive with fireflies darting about in a magical dance among the trees, I could have watched them forever. The enchanting experience was only slightly spoiled by our fellow safari mates that didn’t shut up the entire time, silly buggers.
Do you remember last time I did the proper camping thing – the little dome tents, the no-sleep, scratchy-eyed, bird-nests hair in the morning type of camping….well not this time! Our ‘chalet’ had proper beds swaddled in swathes of filmy mozzie net, a bathroom built out of stone, little deck chairs out the front and a view of the river – this is my style of camping! Oddly enough we stayed in the exact same tent that we were in when we came in 2005!
Next morning we went back out on the river for a morning cruise, accompanied by the 3 rashers of Danish Bacon that were with us the night before! It was very funny watching them sizzle in the heat, slowly turning an even more ‘boiled ham’ pink colour. Didn’t see a fantastic amount of game but there were some tiny little baby crocs on a rock.
It rained for most of the rest of the day, good African downpours, not good for safari but good to watch when you’re warm and dry with a mug of hot chocolate made by a very attentive waiter…
I feel perfectly rested and calm now, probably on account of the delicious guilt-free siestas I had…I even had a mid-morning nap twice too - highly recommended!
