Luckily it all didn’t take too long, the sink was draining before we knew it and in the shower cave, a shiny new pipe had been attached to the taps - no water comes out yet but at least its progress. We jumped in the car, carefully reversing past the man still digging the hole outside, and zoomed off to town for birthday lunch. We went to Mandala House which is one of the oldest buildings in Blantyre I think, it’s an art gallery now with a lovely shop with curio type things in and a little café. We sat outside at a table made from a huge chunk of tree trunk and little tree trunk stools.

Kim and I then went to the traffic office to get the road tax disc for her car sorted out – she hopped out to see which window to stand in front of so I got in the driver’s seat, ready to move the car if needed because the place doubles up as a learner driver centre. I soon found myself in the way, but as I tried to move her car I embarrassed myself greatly by cocking up the clutch control and doing an enormous bunny hop into a pot hole, right in front of the learner driver who was trying to get out– oops! He beamed a big smile at me with a speech bubble that said, ‘silly mzungu woman can’t control her vehicle’ and must have been so lost in his thoughts he forgot what his feet should have been doing and did an even bigger bunny hop! Now I know you feel so silly chuckling out loud to yourself, but I did, for quite some time!!
In the evening we all went out for dinner, they’d organised a cake for me, with candles and everything, it was lovely!
