Anyway, back to Game Haven…we’d joked before we left that it’d be quite funny if they weren’t expecting us since we’d actually made the booking in a bit of a rush with the Manger Guy in a carpark about 3 weeks previously. Parking in our usual spot, we walked in, fingers crossed and went to the reception! Well, the receptionist was a bit stunned but to her credit she did well! Tottering in her high heels over the slightly soggy grass, she showed us to the chalets and then went off saying she’d try to get the Manager Guy on the phone to sort out what to do. As it happened, the Owner Guy was around instead, he’s the chief chef too so he settled us in the bar, made us lunch and then got the room issue sorted out – wasn’t too difficult I don’t think as we were in fact the only people there!! 3 or 4 glasses of wine slipped down everso easily and by sunset, which I watched standing on the khonde looking out over to the distant shire valley, I was definitely more squiffy that I have been in a long time!
We started dinner in glorious isolation in the very fancy restaurant but the Owner Guy and his Second in Command Chef, an lady from America came and joined us after a while, it was great talking to them although the evening took a bizarre turn when he insisted on showing us his huge walk in fridge freezer with enormous fish racked up in lines, heads and tails stiffly sticking out beyond the shelf, a frosty sheen glistening on their scales.
With pudding, he very kindly opened a bottle of champagne and afterwards invited us down to see his house which is just a little way away from the lodge, with an incredibly beautiful view I imagine – couldn’t see a great deal as it was dark but I’s imagine it to be lovely. At about 10pm it was clearly time to shift so he took us back to our chalet. The rest of lodge was in complete darkness, it felt very odd but we changed into our cozzies for our swim anyway! That spun the evening out a little more but we definitely peaked too soon – by 11.15 we’d had a second shower and were tucked up in warm beds – marvellous.
I had a great sleep, in the morning the floaty curtains were billowing and the sunshine streamed in, a fantastic way to wake up! Owner Guy was up and about at breakfast time and offered us a game drive round the estate, we saw the amazing sable antelope, his zebra and wildebeest with their babies and hundreds and hundreds of flames lilies – just imagine if that was your drive to work! Envy and jealousy are not attractive qualities but OMG, I was, very!
