Half way there

The last 3 weeks have seemed like one long – very long – training session. I’ve whipped round the country with various members of the NMC and trained up nurses and midwives to be brand new CPD facilitators. Every hospital in every district now has someone in charge of CPD!

In true Malawi style, not everything went according to plan - one place had let us book knowing they didn't have a room available so we ended up in a sort of corridor that felt like an underground bunker, another place had overbooked so we were popped in a prayer room down the road, next day we were in an enormous and very chilly conference hall and the last one was the hotel dining room which didn't please the late breakfasters since they were booted out before they'd had a second cup of tea!

Tiring as it was, I did have fun too and I desparately wanted it to be a fun workshop for the participants as well - no sitting and snoozing they way through the 2 days! It felt good to be out there actually doing something rather than the endless office based stuff that has driven me crazy. Has it been worth two years of my life? Well, yes, if it means that from now on nurses and midwives here will have a way of getting the on going training they need to do the job as it should be done.

The programme is yet to be officially launched but we’re keeping fingers crossed for that at the end of the month – but at least we’re half way there!
