The Landlord is spitting – a water bill for 600,000MK has arrived…makes my 18000 seem quite piddly. A pipe has been leaking under the house, in fact it perforated in the most dramatic way – a bit like a dissecting AAA for the medical people out there!
On Sunday, when I got back from the VSO nurses jolly to the Lake, I found men digging all over the garden to locate the offending pipe and replace it. In true workman fashion, one man did the actual excavating with 6 or 7 standing about doing not terribly much but they got the job done. I don’t think its just us that been having a problem though, huge trenches are lining the roads round about and there is a squidgy fireman’s hose lying in snakey squiggles on the road that seems to be connecting everyone to the main pipe. I think whenever it gets driven over it disrupts the supply because the taps are all coughing and boffing when you switch them on.
Lilongwe is running short of water according to the papers, I’m not surprised – its all spilling out in Area 43…and to add to the craziness, the landlord has instructed his pool be emptied, cleaned and re-filled! Its being scooped out bucket by bucket onto the grass – the frogs haven’t really noticed they’re not in the pool anymore, the ground is so waterlogged they’re still splashing about quite happily.
