I’ve moved into my Lilongwe house and into the 25th Bedroom of my life!
Nos 1 – 24
1 – Thyolo (bit fuzzy on this one but I must have had one)
2 – Mzuzu (shared with my sisters I think, we used to take all the sheets of the beds during nap time and build good tents with them)
3 - Solomon islands (shared with S and NN again, we had a great ceiling fan that we used to put our My Little Ponies on + dad’s pants and then switch it up to 6 and make them fly)
4 – Baba’s house (there were butterflies on the ceiling and water pipes that chatted to you whenever a tap was switched on)
5 – My Pink Bedroom (I had a very cool hot air balloon lampshade that I could hang teddies in)
6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 – Boarding school (I can’t really remember every bed but the midnight feasts and post-lights out games were fun)
14 – Limbe (there were lots of flowers with big juicy seed pods outside my window)
15 – Blantyre (h’mmm, not so sure about this one, I think my brain might have been frazzled by playing too much Prince of Persia and Titus the Fox)
16 – Tanzania (The cat was sent in to kill the rats that came in the packing boxes)
17 – Malt House Moroccan (Sunset Red, Toureg Blue and Ochre - and more recently, the best bed in the world)
18, 19, 20, 21 – University (the most memorable being the one that was damp, green and had a very hairy carpet that I was once forced to sleep on, it definitely had fleas)
22 - Moffat Road (great view of the Tooting Roof Tops)
23 - Gilbey Road (tiny but worth it)
24 - Malamulo (also home to assorted spiders and other bugs but I loved curling up for a late afternoon nap as the sun set behind the hills)
Anyway, back to the newest one - it has an en suite bathroom but this is not a good as it sounds - the plastic loo seat bit my bum on the first night though because there is a huge crack in it, the sink taps refuse to turn on and then just as you’re about to give up they cough and splutter all over you. I’ve now given up on trying to get the shower to play the game but still its my en suite I’m going to enjoy the fact its there. I’ve found some fab material for curtains and a bed spread, both of which will perfectly match the wall hanging and cushions I bought in Zambia. Its time for a sophisticated bedroom I think!
I like the rest of the house too although its quite dark – there are 3 more showers and 3 more loos (I’m not buying that many loo brushes I can tell you!). There is a little khonde out the front and a tiny one at the back with a bit of grass and raised flower bed that I’m going to create my veggie patch in. The house is actually semi-detached, the other half being a guest house for another organisation. The Landlord lives on the property too along with half a dozen dogs (+ puppies), a few broken down trucks and piles and piles of maize stalks but there is a nice big wall all around, a very sweet old guard and Baby Beast and I feel safe so we’re happy.
