Working hard?

Well, yes, actually – its pretty difficult getting over 100 people to arrive at the same place on the same day and keep them fed, watered and entertained for 3 days!!

Last week was the VSO national conference which my fellow reps and I organised – we held it up at Kande Beach, on the northern Lakeshore, and even if we do say so ourselves, we did a pretty good job!!!

Almost every VSO volunteer in the country came and we had a mixture of updates from the Programme Office, workshops we facilitated ourselves on everything from conflict resolution to how to look after your laptop and a guest speaker who told us all about his marvellous new invention – the CareCar which is a stretcher contraption that is fixed onto a bicycle for transporting people to hospital. Friday night had people up on the bar doing karaoke and on Saturday, with Joel as Quiz Master extraordinaire, we had teams competing for prizes in our VSO international quiz night! It was hilarious…Do you know which medical procedure killed Robert Burns or what the national animal of Canada is?!

As expected there were a few grumblers – there always are aren’t there?! We had to be extra specially tough on reimbursements to keep within budget and so told everyone to pack their own lunchbox for the journey but that still didn’t stop some people trying to claim for a 50p sandwich. ‘Ummmmm, no’ said Frosty the Snow Bitch on several occasions, ‘We said no reimbursements for anything but travel – go back and re-think your form please’!

There was plenty of swimming and G&Ts, time to catch up with old friends and make new ones but it felt funny to know that soon enough I’ll be leaving, my name will be added to the ‘been here, done that’ list and everything will carry on without me.
