Invasion of the plasmodia

It was going to happen sooner or later – I have malaria!

One hungry mossie spat some little parasites into me about 10 days ago and they’ve have been happily growing and multiplying ever since, turning my red blood cells into chunky little raspberries then making them burst and leaving my spleen and liver to clear up the mess.

I’m on quinine and I don’t like it one bit. I have water drops & church bells ringing in my ears and everyone sounds like they’re talking through a scuba mask. Its all very strange.

I’m lucky though; I got tested and treated early. About 300 million people a year get this disease, and 1 million die because they don’t get the drugs they need in time. Malaria prevention strategies are numerous and worldwide but it still isn’t enough – if you fancy donating a mosquito net to a family out here let me know. They cost £5.
