Polyester Big Wigs

With slight trepidation after the last presentation fiasco, I went to trot out my spiel at the Nurse Leaders meeting this week. All the big names in Malawian nursing were there, decked out in a variety of polyester attire.

All sorts of briefings were given (not all that briefly though!) and issues discussed – I diligently took notes and studied the faces round room, matching them to the list of names and trying to learn whos who. My slot came just before lunch, just when the fidgeting about and scratching of wigs was at its peak but at least this time round everyone was awake, no newspapers in sight and no arguments occurring!

With not much time and a very long agenda, lunch was a quick zip down to the dining room (oh, I forgot to say we were in a hotel, proper conference room and everything!) and then we carried on. As the afternoon wore on, the air less freeesh what with the wilting polyester, a few heads started to nod - luckily I managed to keep eyes open despite the warm fustiness. Everything was eventually wrapped up with a round of question time and after a mad dash to fill handbags with the leftover snacks everyone shot off home – job done!

Despite the nonsense that goes one here that drives me mad - the time wasting, the red tape, the crazy affection for protocol – I do find myself somehow loving them for it which confuses me no end.
