Moving on, moving up...

I'm leaving Malamulo...

I'm going up country a bit to Lilongwe to start a new job with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Malawi! All a bit sudden I know and I've got mixed feelings about it but it all might just help to get the standards of nursing care here to where they should be and its a great opportunity for me too. I'll be working with the NMC to create and implement a continuing professional development program so that once nurses qualify the Council can keep tabs on their practice and ensure they update thier skills every year. Hopefully that'll mean they take responsibility for thier practice and the poor patients get a better quality of care. There are going to be some huge obstacles and I know there will be endless meetings but it'll all be worth it in the end. I don't know where I'll be living yet but I have been to meet some of the people I'll be working with, they are all very keen and I think thats half the battle won. I'm sad I'll be leaving Malamulo, just as it was all feeling so much more positive but its better to leave while things are looking up i think than seem as though I was ditching everything because it was going badly.

I do feel guilty about leaving the students though after promising them that i'd be around to help them on the wards but this new thing will mean that all nurses, not just the ones here, will get the help they need to improve so I'm going to focus on a bigger picture and more long term vision. Besides, Ali is still here and a new Peace Corp volunteer has come too...

All change....
